Falcons, Nitros Win League Openers

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity girls’ tennis team dominated Hoover High 17-1 in a Pacific League showdown on Sept. 5.
In singles, No. 2 Claudia Chmielewski won decisively with scores of 6-0, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 1 doubles pair, Liudmila Abadzheva and Elena Manuelian, swept with scores of 6-2, 6-0, 6-3. Meanwhile, Nicolette Aghabegian and Gabriella Rouveyrol at No. 2 doubles also won in straight sets with a trio of 6-1 scores.
Anais Khachatryan at No. 1 singles won a pair of sets with scores of 6-3, 6-2, and No. 3 singles Natalie Mirbegian won two sets with scores of 7-6 (7-5) and 6-1 before alternating with Ariah Armen who contributed with a 6-4 win. The No. 3 doubles team changed each round, starting with Ramya Kuramasuriar and Hailee Yoon, who secured a 6-2 victory. Allison Bashar substituted in for Yoon, pairing with Kuramasuriar for another 6-2 win. Reserves Faith Woo and Linnea Russell finished the third round with a 7-5 victory to help the doubles’ teams post a sweep over its Hoover opponents.
The Falcons picked up a rain-shortened 13-2 nonleague victory over South Pasadena on Sept. 1 as No. 2 Mirbegian swept her opposition, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0.
No. 1 Khachatryan (6-4, 6-3), No. 3 Chmielewski (6-0, 6-1), the No. 1 doubles team of Abadzheva and Manuelian (6-3, 6-4), and the No. 2 duo of Rouveyrol and Aghabegian (6-3, 6-1) each won a pair of sets. The No. 3 team of Kuramasuriar and Yoon won a set 6-3. Bashar alternated with Yoon and the new duo with Kuramasuriar picked up another 6-3 victory.
CVHS previously lost a nonleague matchup at Brentwood School in Los Angeles 10-8.
No. 1 Khachatryan (6-4, 6-1) and No. 3 Chmielewski (6-4, 6-0) each won a pair of sets while No. 2 Mirbegian added a 6-2 victory in singles action. The No. 1 team of Abadzheva and Manuelian (6-2), the No. 2 tandem of Aghabegian and Rouveyrol (6-0), and the No. 3 duo of Kuramasuriar and Yoon (6-2) each won one set in doubles action.
Crescenta Valley (2-1 overall, 1-0 in league) will visit Glendale for a league matchup on Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Pasadena on Sept. 14.


GLENDALE

The Nitros routed visiting Muir High of Pasadena 16-2 in their season and Pacific League opener on Sept. 5 as the doubles teams swept their opposition.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Gohar Harutyunyan and Pauline Tekelian dominated with consecutive 6-0, 6-0 victories before alternating with Julie Sarad and McKinley Grey, who added a 6-1 win. Marie Kaloghlian and Garine Melkonian at No. 2 doubles secured a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins before alternating with Natel Amirian and Anahit Nazolyan, who also earned a 6-0 victory.
The No. 3 duo of Kristy Tarbinian and Medrisya Minassian posted a 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 sweep. In singles action, No. 2 Lilit Arakelyan recorded 6-4 and 6-0 wins, while No. 3 Lori Torosyan delivered a pair of 6-0 victories. No. 1 Natalie Mirzakhanyan won a set, 7-5, before Gohar Barseghyan stepped in and secured a pair of wins by 6-1 and 6-2 scores.
Glendale (1-0 overall) will host Crescenta Valley High for a league contest on Sept. 12 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Burroughs High of Burbank on Sept. 14.


HOOVER

The Tornados lost to visiting Crescenta Valley 17-1 in their regular season and Pacific League opener on Sept. 5 as No. 2 Alexandra Nemirovskaya won the only set with a 6-0 score.
Hoover (0-1 overall) will visit Burroughs High in Burbank for a league match on Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Arcadia on Sept. 14.
