Falcons Drop Home Opener to West Covina

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity football team lost to visiting West Covina 24-7 in its home opener on Sept. 1.
Senior quarterback Jacob Deno completed 15 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 20 yards on four carries, while senior Bjorn Hermansen made four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Senior Cristian Flores recorded five carries for 19 yards and six receptions for 20 yards, sophomore Xavier Thompson made three catches for 32 yards, and senior Nathan Martinez hauled in two catches for 21 yards.
Junior Tyler Matsuda racked up 11 tackles, while senior Jackson Roehr, senior Andranik Saryan and sophomore Leonidas Grant each finished with 10 tackles. Senior Lachlan Blunt and junior Chander Thome each tallied nine tackles, while senior Michael Clark, junior Jesse Flores and sophomore Torin Blunt each registered seven tackles. Senior Zachary Sheen contributed six tackles, while senior Mateo Soriano produced five tackles. Junior Dominic Saris had three tackles, while Bryce Alonzo scored one PAT.
The Falcons visited San Marino for a nonleague contest on Sept. 8; the game finished after the Glendale News-Press’ deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. CVHS (1-1 overall) will host La Cañada in a nonleague game on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. before visiting Hoover High on Sept. 22.
