Raymond Martin

Raymond Martin 1935 – 2023

Raymond Martin passed away on July 30, 2023, from heart and kidney complications at the age of 87.

Born Raymond Harold Martin to parents Harold and Betty, he grew up in the San Fernando Valley in California with his two brothers Gordon and Roger, and his sister, Carol. He attended Van Nuys High School at the same time as actors, Natalie Wood and Robert Redford and yet-undiscovered baseball legend, Don Drysdale.

Raymond was athletic, competing in track and field events at the high school level and later at Los Angeles Valley College and the University of Southern California. He was third in line to compete in shotput at the Olympic Games in 1956, but couldn’t, due to a significant injury. As an older adult, Ray participated in senior competitions and received awards for his accomplishments.

A truly meaningful part of Raymond’s life came from his career working for the Glendale Unified School District at both Glendale High School and Allan F. Daily High School. Coach Ray Martin loved being a teacher and took great pride in the achievements of his students. He integrated enthusiasm and his knowledge of track events into his coaching style and led many of his students to win ribbons and medals.

He also taught general education and life skills classes such as grocery cashiering and drivers’ training. Known as “Big Ray” throughout the district and standing 6’5”, he was well known and well liked for his gentle-giant personality. He stayed with the district for 30 years. His grandson, Zachary Bolan currently works for GUSD as a computer supervisor.

Raymond met the “love of his life” Laura Mae Studebaker at Daily High School, and they were married in 1978. That was only the beginning of their 45-year journey together. Laura went on to work for Hoover High School while they lived in Glendale and Sunland-Tujunga, but adventure called them. For the next three decades, they established homes and businesses in four different states, ultimately settling in Central Point, Oregon.

Ray taught for a short time at Crater Lake High School before retiring from education. Ray and Laura also owned several craft/souvenir/antique stores wherever they landed. They both enjoyed creating unique, handmade items and engaging with customers.

Raymond is survived by wife, Laura Martin and family members Roger Martin, Carol Steed, Joseph Martin, Roberta Martin, Lisa Daniels, Greg Daniels, Susan Bolan, Jeffrey Bolan, Kimberly Ann Stinson and Carla Carey. He has five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made in honor of Raymond Martin to Allan F. Daily High School to support students in need. For more information, please contact susanbolan710@gmail.com.
