Hermansen Shines in Falcons’ Opener

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity football team secured an impressive 55-19 victory in their season opener at Eagle Rock High in Los Angeles on Aug. 25.
This marked the Falcons first season-opening win since 2019, excluding the shortened 2020 spring campaign impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Falcons’ 36-point margin of victory is their largest since defeating Sierra Vista High of Baldwin Park 40-0 in 2021 and the 55 points is the team’s highest in a single game since their 70-0 triumph over Santa Rosa Academy of Menifee in 2019.
Senior Bjorn Hermansen made a pair of catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 71 yards with a touchdown on four carries and scored an additional touchdown on a kickoff return. Senior Andranik Saryan rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, senior quarterback Jacob Deno completed three passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Cristian Flores had 12 carries for 126 yards and one touchdown.
Sophomore Leonidas Grant rushed for 30 yards on four carries, made a 7-yard catch and added four tackles on defense while sophomore Bryce Alonzo went 7-for-8 in PAT attempts with two tackles on defense. Junior Dominic Dipiazza had two carries for 4 yards and a tackle on dense while junior Matthew Sepanossian and freshman Julian Savery each rushed for 1 yard.
Junior Tyler Matsuda racked up a team-high 10 tackles, senior Lachlan Blunt collected seven tackles and three sacks, and senior Jackson Roehr registered seven tackles. Senior Mateo Soriano finished with four tackles and a blocked field-goal attempt, while junior Jesse Flores tallied four tackles and a sack. Senior Nathan Martinez recorded three tackles and an interception, while sophomore Torin Blunt produced three tackles and a sack. Junior Chander Thome and sophomore Xavier Thompson were each credited with three tackles, while senior Andrew Leventhal, senior Giovanni Vartanyan and junior Dominic Saris each contributed two tackles.
The Falcons (1-0 overall) hosted West Covina on Sept. 1; the nonleague game finished after the Glendale News-Press’ deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. CVHS will visit San Marino for a nonleague game on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. before hosting La Cañada on Sept. 15.
