Families gathered at the park from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. to enjoy an afternoon cookout and hear from a variety of speakers observing the meaning of the holiday, which commemorates the day when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. Attendees also donated nonperishable foods that went to the Glendale YWCA’s food pantry.
