Baseball: Martinez Lifts Nitros in Pacific League Opener

The Glendale High School varsity baseball team defeated host Pasadena 5-1 in its Pacific League opener on Feb. 27. Senior Jason Martinez, who went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a walk at the plate, pitched a complete game with one strikeout, allowing one earned run on seven hits and one walk.
Junior Joseph Tapia went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two walks, while senior Liam Roney registered a double, an RBI, a run and a walk. Senior Xander Knur finished with a hit, two runs, a stolen base and a walk, while senior Jacob Hyde recorded a double. Senior Sheantell Cruz and junior Dante Vasquez each tallied a base hit, while junior Ace Baker walked once.
The Nitros narrowly lost at South Pasadena 11-10 in their Dave Moore Tournament finale on Feb. 24. Cruz went 4-for-5 with a double, four RBIs, three stolen bases and two runs, while Baker pitched 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
Knur registered a hit, five stolen bases, four runs, two walks and one RBI, Tapia tallied a hit, three runs, two stolen bases and two walks, and Martinez contributed a hit, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk. Senior Alex Idolor walked once, scored a run and stole a base, while senior Austin Aldrete recorded four walks. Vasquez was credited with an RBI and a walk, junior Austin Gonzalez and Roney each walked once, and Hyde stole a base.
Glendale picked up a 2-1 victory at Providence High in Burbank in a tournament game on Feb. 23.
Junior Garo Manuelian pitched four innings with six strikeouts while allowing one unearned run on one hit and three walks. Gonzalez had two strikeouts in 2 2/3 scoreless innings on the mound.
Hyde went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Knur recorded a double and an RBI. Vasquez registered a hit, a run and a walk, while Tapia tallied a base hit and walked once. Junior Derek Chalian finished with two stolen bases and a run, while Martinez had three walks and three stolen bases. Cruz walked once and stole a pair of bases, Idolor scored a run, and Aldrete walked once and scored a run.
The Nitros secured a 3-2 victory over visiting Mountain View High of El Monte in a tournament game on Feb. 22.
Aldrete pitched a complete game with six strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks. Cruz went 2-for-3 with three steals and a run, while Gonzalez and Knur each recorded a hit and an RBI.
Glendale (3-5 overall, 1-0 in league) will host Crescenta Valley High for a league game on March 5 at 3 p.m. before visiting the Falcons on March 8.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons lost at Burroughs High in Burbank 7-3 in their Pacific League opener on Feb. 28.
Freshman Mike Herman registered a hit and two RBIs, senior Jacob Deno contributed a hit, an RBI, a run, a stolen base and a walk, and senior Brandon Kwon produced a hit, a stolen base and a walk. Freshman Cole Richards scored a run and stole a base, junior Jimmy Spears walked once and scored a run, and juniors Chris Torres and Dashiell Schultz each walked once. Junior Colin Moore allowed four runs (zero earned) on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts across five innings on the mound. Junior Aiden Rose had two strikeouts in one inning of relief.
Crescenta Valley was shut out at Bishop Amat High in La Puente 5-0 in its South Hills Tournament finale on Feb. 24.
Spears tallied a double, while Kwon finished with a base hit and a stolen base. Sophomores Brock Robeson and Dante Cerecedes each walked once, while senior Jake Rendo stole a base. Freshman Gunner Herman pitched four innings with four strikeouts, while junior Jacob Mucic tossed two innings of relief with one strikeout.
Crescenta Valley picked up a 3-2 extra-inning victory over visiting Walnut in a tournament game on Feb. 22.
Moore allowed one earned run on three hits and no walks with five strikeouts across five innings on the mound, while Rose pitched three innings of relief with three strikeouts to earn the win. Kwon went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a walk, while Schultz finished with a hit, a run and a stolen base. Deno recorded a hit and an RBI, while Mike Herman, Spears and Robeson each tallied a base hit.
The Falcons (2-4, 0-1) will visit Glendale for a league game on March 5 at 3 p.m. before hosting the Nitros on March 8.

HOOVER
The Tornados lost at Muir High in Pasadena 13-1 in their Pacific League opener on Feb. 27.
Senior Bryan Olmedo registered a hit and a run, while junior Gabriel Flores and sophomore Daniel Cano each tallied a base hit. Freshman Alex Weimar was credited with an RBI, while freshman Kieran Sinta walked once. Sophomore Jordan Mahler pitched 2 1/3 innings while sophomore Owen Marks pitched 1 2/3 innings with one strikeout.
Hoover tied visiting Northridge Academy 1-1 in a rain-shortened nonleague game on Feb. 26. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
The Tornados narrowly lost at Rosemead 4-3 in a nonleague game on Feb. 24.
Olmedo went 2-for-4 with a triple, Cano went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and senior Julian Corral went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run. Weimar registered a hit, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a walk, senior Daniel Baneham finished with a hit and a stolen base, and junior Enzo Mitchell tallied a base hit. Flores walked twice and scored a run, while freshman Jackson Sushinski walked once.
Mahler pitched 1 2/3 innings with one strikeout, Marks pitched 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout and junior Jude Maldonado pitched 1/3 of an inning.
Hoover (1-4-1, 0-1) will host Burroughs High of Burbank for a league game on March 5 at 3 p.m. before hosting Eagle Rock in Los Angeles on March 6.
