Boys’ Volleyball: Tournament Run Marks Season Start for Glendale, Crescenta Valley 

The Glendale High School varsity boys’ volleyball team suffered a four-game loss to visiting Glendale Adventist, 15-25, 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, in a nonleague match on Feb. 20.
Junior Thaddeus Whiting registered 13 blocks and 10 kills, senior Ibrahim Alnaqib finished with 11 kills, and freshman Isaiah Mascardo tallied 11 digs. Junior Caleb Shimasaki contributed seven assists, five kills and three aces, while junior Benjamin Salmeron produced 10 blocks and five kills. Senior Thomas Gonzales recorded six kills and three blocks, while senior Koko Haboian had six assists and one ace.
The Nitros competed in the Monrovia Invitational Tournament to open the regular season on Feb. 19.
Glendale finished second in the gold bracket after losing to Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, 25-19. The Nitros previously defeated tournament host Monrovia, 25-23, in the semifinal match. Glendale also swept pool play, posting wins over Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, 26-25, 20-25, 15-9, St. Paul High of Santa Fe, 25-7, 25-18, and Pacifica High of Oxnard, 25-13, 25-18. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale New-Press.
The Nitros (3-1 overall) will host Firebaugh High of Lynwood for a nonleague match on Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. before hosting South El Monte on Feb. 29.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons picked up a four-game victory at Hart High in Santa Clarita, 25-20, 25-18, 25-27, 26-24, in a nonleague match on Feb. 21.
Crescenta Valley hosted its First Serve Tournament and finished with a 5-1 record after two days of play.
Crescenta Valley swept California High of Whittier, 25-23, 25-23, and Crespi High of Encino, 25-18, 25-17, while suffering a two-game loss against Paraclete High of Lancaster 17-25, 23-25 on Feb. 19.
The Falcons opened the first day of tournament play on Feb. 17 with three wins over Simi Valley, 25-19, 25-23, Bravo High of Los Angeles, 25-12, 25-14, and Castaic, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Crescenta Valley (6-1) will host Claremont for a nonleague match on Feb. 28 at 4:45 p.m. before visiting South Pasadena on March 5.

HOOVER
The Tornados opened the regular season at Marshall Fundamental in Pasadena on Feb. 22; the nonleague match ended after the Glendale News-Press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue.
Hoover will visit Northridge Academy for a nonleague match on March 4 at 3 p.m. before traveling to Pasadena on March 5.
