Brand Associates, in partnership with Brand Library & Art Center, is pleased to announce the opening of its 51st Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper (Brand 51), on view from July 8 through Sept. 1 at the Brand Library & Art Center. The exhibition includes 98 artworks chosen by juror Ara Oshagan, artist and curator of ReflectSpace Gallery at Glendale Central Library. The Opening Ceremony on Saturday, July 8, from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., will be a festive affair, bringing together artists from diverse backgrounds — some presenting their first foray into a gallery along with seasoned professionals whose work is widely known.
This year, more than 1,200 pieces of artwork were submitted to Brand Associates through an open call process. Oshagan selected 98 pieces to be exhibited in the Brand Gallery space, noting the difficulty of having to limit his selections amongst the caliber of submissions.
“My selections leaned into the social and political space, into works that showed a delicate and compelling balance between the idea and the aesthetic, between content and texture, and the work as object and as conduit. Eclectic, textured and experimental works that strove to break bounds either through process or construction or in the ideas presented also tended to grab my attention, as were culturally expansive and diverse works that often are not as visible in our art world ecosystem.”
Attendees can expect a feast for the eyes with artworks large and small, 2- and 3-dimensional, and demonstrating a wide variety of creative approaches to the paper medium.
The majority of artworks on display in Brand 51 are available to purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to support cultural programming at Brand Library. Catalogs of Brand 51 are also for sale. For details and to purchase catalogs visit: associatesofbrand.org.
