Boys’ Tennis: Finley Captures League Singles Crown

The Crescenta Valley, Hoover and Glendale high school varsity boys’ tennis teams sent individuals to compete in the Pacific League Tournament on April 22 and 23.
Crescenta Valley’s Jaidyn Finley, the No. 1 seed, won the singles tournament after defeating Arcadia’s No. 2-seeded player in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.
He previously defeated Burbank’s No. 4-seeded player, 5-7, 7-5, 10-3, in the semifinal round. Finley posted a second-round victory over Burroughs High School’s No. 9-seeded player with scores of 6-0 and 6-1, while earning a clean sweep with a pair of 6-0 victories in the opening round against Glendale’s No. 16-seeded Vynce Cajanding.
CV’s Ethan Kim, the No. 12 seed, lost to Burbank’s No. 4-seeded player in the second round after his first-round opponent conceded due to injury. CVHS’ Aiden Kim, the No. 10 seed, was also ousted in the second round by Arcadia’s No. 2-seeded player after sweeping Burroughs High’s No. 7-seeded player with a pair of 6-3 set wins in the first round.
Meanwhile, Hoover’s Alec Avedisian, the No. 6 seed, lost to Burroughs High’s No. 3-seeded player in the second round. Avedisian defeated Arcadia’s No. 11-seeded player, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) in the opening round. Hoover’s Daniel Shakaryan, the No. 14 seed, lost to Burroughs High’s No. 3-seeded player in the opening round.
In doubles play, the top-seeded team of Falcons pair Hochan Lee and Daniel Lee lost to Arcadia’s No. 8-seeded team in the second round. The duo posted a clean sweep with a pair of 6-0 victories over Glendale’s No. 16-seeded team of Leo Petrosyan and Wellington Renteria in the opening round.
The Falcons’ No. 6-seeded team of Dylan Kim and Easan Hamkins lost to Burbank’s No. 3-seeded team in the second round. The duo posted a clean sweep with a pair of 6-0 victories over Hoover’s No. 11-seeded team of Sargis Vardanyan and Vincent Abechian in the first round.
CV’s No. 12-seeded team of Joseph Choi and Joshua Kook lost to Arcadia’s No. 4-seeded team in the second round. The duo swept Burroughs High’s No. 5-seeded team in the opening round with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Meanwhile, Hoover’s No. 13-seeded team of Chris Kim and Alec Sarkissian lost to Arcadia’s No. 4-seeded team in the opening round.
The CIF Southern Section team playoff brackets will be released on April 29 at 11 a.m.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons suffered a 13-5 Pacific League loss against visiting Arcadia in their regular-season finale on April 18.
The No. 2 doubles team of Daniel Lee and Kook swept with scores of 7-6, 6-4 and 6-3, while the No. 1 tandem of Ethan Kim and Finley added a pair of wins with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
CVHS finished the campaign with an 8-4 league record (11-7 overall).

HOOVER
The Tornados picked up a 15-3 Pacific League victory over visiting Glendale in their regular-season finale on April 18.
No. 1 Alec Avedisian (6-0, 6-1, 6-2) and No. 3 Vardanyan (6-0, 6-0, 6-2) each swept their singles opponents, while No. 2 Shakaryan added a pair of wins with identical 6-0 scores.
The No. 1 doubles team of Abechian and Kim won a pair of sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-4. Kim alternated with Edgar Balasian, and the new duo added a 6-3 victory to complete the sweep. The No. 3 tandem of Justin Weitzman and Noah Kurien won a pair of sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-3. The No. 2 team of Daron Momjian and Sarkissian won a set with a 6-2 score before alternating with Mark Gevorgyan and Karen Khondkharyan, who added a 6-1 victory.
Hoover finished the campaign with a 4-8 overall and league record.

GLENDALE
The Nitros suffered a 15-3 Pacific League loss at Hoover High in their regular-season finale on April 18.
The No. 1 doubles team of Leo de Guademar and Amari Richarson won a pair of sets with identical 6-4 scores, while No. 3 Armen Paruryan added a 7-5 victory in singles play.
Glendale finished the campaign winless with a 0-12 league record (0-13 overall).
