Softball: Derian, Sabelis Shine in Falcons’ League Opener

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity softball team defeated host Muir High in Pasadena 12-2 in its Pacific League opener on March 13. Senior Perri Derian, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, pitched a five-inning complete game with six strikeouts.
Senior Jaiden Sabelis sealed the game with her first career home run, a two-run shot that just cleared the left-center fence. She ended the game with an impressive 3-for-4 performance, contributing four runs and three RBIs.
“Honestly, I was just laughing the whole time. I didn’t even expect it to go over honestly,” Sabelis said. “I felt like I was floating around the bases.”
Junior Mila Reddy went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run, while junior Alexa Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and two stolen bases. Junior Hannah Wyroski registered a hit and an RBI, while sophomore Kate Barnes finished with a hit and a stolen base. Freshman Chloe Mulcahey scored twice and stole a base, junior Megumi Ono tallied an RBI and a run, and junior Jasmine Hernandez stole a base.
The Falcons (5-6 overall, 1-0 in league) will host Glendale for a league game on March 26 at 3:45 p.m. before visiting Pasadena on March 28.


GLENDALE

Glendale High School senior Faith Alvarez recorded a base hit during a Simi Valley Tournament game against Kennedy High of Granada Hills.

The Nitros lost to Kennedy High of Granada Hills 10-1 in a Simi Valley Tournament game on March 9. Junior Natalie Minkler pitched four innings with six strikeouts.
Seniors Jazmin Combs and Faith Alvarez each tallied a base hit, sophomore Rachel Francis walked once and scored a run, and junior Jade Marquez and sophomore Sky Smoot each walked once.
Glendale lost to visiting Buena High of Ventura 10-0 in a tournament game on March 9.
Minkler pitched two innings, while Marquez pitched one inning. Combs recorded a base hit, while Smoot walked twice and stole a base.
The Nitros shut out visiting Oakwood High of North Hollywood 8-0 in a nonleague game on March 7. Minkler, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and a double at the plate, pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts, three hits and one walk.
Sophomore Loraly Cano went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run, Francis went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Smoot went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Sophomore Carla Bedolla went 2-for-4 with a run, while Marquez went 2-for-3 with a walk. Combs recorded a double, while Faith Alvarez finished with a hit, two runs, two stolen bases and a walk. Freshman Jordan Alvarez scored twice, while junior Mercedes Hernandez was credited with an RBI and a run.
Glendale (5-8) will visit Crescenta Valley High for a Pacific League game on March 26 at 3:45 p.m. before traveling to Burroughs High in Burbank on March 28.

HOOVER

The Tornados lost at Burbank 11-2 in their Pacific League opener on March 12.
Junior captain Evelyn Ortiz, who had two hits and a stolen base at the plate, pitched six innings with five strikeouts.
Freshman Giselle Ascencio recorded a double, senior captain Paola Cano finished with a hit, a run and a walk, and sophomore Samantha Marquez tallied a base hit. Junior Natalie Menasaka scored a run, while freshmen Hannah Parker and Younona Babayan each walked once.
Hoover overwhelmed visiting St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy of Downey with a 16-5 nonleague victory on March 9.
Ortiz, who went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a walk at the plate, pitched five innings with eight strikeouts, while Cano went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and three runs. Parker recorded three runs, three stolen bases, an RBI and a walk, while Ascencio finished with three walks, three runs and a stolen base. Sophomore Sophia Hernandez tallied three walks, two stolen bases and a run, while Menasaka walked twice, stole two bases and scored a run. Junior Kim De Leon scored twice and walked once, while freshman Arijana Matijasevic walked once.
The Tornados lost to visiting Fontana 14-1 in a nonleague game on March 7. Ortiz, who walked twice, stole two bases and scored a run, pitched five innings with five strikeouts. Cano walked once and stole two bases, while Matijasevic and Parker each walked once.
Hoover (5-3, 0-1) will host Burroughs High of Burbank for a league game on March 26 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Arcadia on March 28.
