Mahler Tosses Four Shutout Innings in Hoover Baseball’s Win

The Hoover High School varsity baseball team shut out visiting Rosemead 2-0 in a nonleague game on Feb. 13.
Sophomore Jordan Mahler allowed three hits and no walks with a pair of strikeouts across four scoreless innings to earn the win. Freshman Jack Coppersmith finished with one strikeout in a perfect inning of relief, while freshman Jesse Carbonneau allowed one hit with a strikeout in one inning of relief. Senior Julian Corral stole a base after reaching on an error while also pitching a perfect inning of relief. Sophomore Owen Marks recorded a double, an RBI, a run and a stolen base, senior Steve Park tallied a hit, a run and a stolen base, and sophomore Daniel Cano had a hit. Senior Bryan Olmedo contributed a walk and a stolen base, while senior Isaiah Alvarado walked once.
The Tornados lost to visiting Flintridge Prep of La Cañada Flintridge 11-4 in their season opener on Feb. 10.
Corral went 2-for-3 with a double, three stolen bases and two runs, while junior Gabriel Flores went 2-for-3 with two steals, an RBI and a run. Olmedo finished with a hit and two RBIs, freshman Alex Weimar recorded a hit and a run, and Cano tallied a hit. Meanwhile, Mahler had three strikeouts across 2 1/3 innings on the mound.
Hoover (1-1 overall) will host Bosco Tech High of Rosemead for a nonleague game on Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. before hosting Northridge Academy on Feb. 21.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons lost to visiting Damien High of La Verne 5-0 in a South Hills Tournament game on Feb. 14.
Junior Jimmy Spears recorded the only base hit for Crescenta Valley, senior Brandon Kwon walked once and stole a base, and senior Jacob Deno and senior Jake Rendo each walked one. Freshman Gunner Herman allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk across 4 1/3 innings on the mound, while junior Aiden Rose struck out two batters in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
After a 12-inning marathon, Crescenta Valley suffered a narrow 5-4 season-opening loss at Bonita in a tournament game on Feb. 10.
Junior Sam Sellars covered six innings on the mound, striking out seven batters while allowing two unearned runs on three hits and no walks. Junior Colin Moore allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts over three innings. Gunner Herman, who walked once and stole a base, struck out three batters and allowed an unearned run in two innings of relief. Sophomore Brock Robeson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base, Kwon went 3-for-6 with a run, and Spears went 2-for-6 with a run and a stolen base. Junior Jacob Mucic finished with a hit, a run and a walk, while junior Chris Torres and freshman Mike Herman each recorded a hit. Freshman Cole Richards scored a run, while Rendo tallied an RBI.
Crescenta Valley (0-2) will open Pacific League action at Burroughs High in Burbank on Feb. 27 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting the Bears on March 1.


GLENDALE
The Nitros lost at Royal High in Simi Valley 11-4 in a nonleague game on Feb. 13.
Senior Sheantell Cruz went 3-for-4 with two steals and a run, while senior Liam Roney and junior Joseph Tapia each tallied a double and a walk. Senior Jason Martinez recorded a hit, a run, a stolen base and a walk, while junior Derek Chalian scored twice and stole a base after reaching on a pair of walks. Senior Austin Aldrete struck out five batters across three innings, while junior Garo Manuelian covered three innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk.
Glendale suffered a 5-3 season-opening loss at Viewpoint High in Calabasas on Feb. 10.
Junior Dante Vasquez, Cruz and Aldrete each finished with a hit and an RBI, Roney registered a hit and a run, and senior Alex Idolor, Tapia and Martinez each contributed a hit. Senior Jacob Hyde and junior Ace Baker each scored once, while Chalian pitched a scoreless inning of relief with one walk.
The Nitros (0-2) will host Mountain View High of El Monte for a Dave Moore tournament game on Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. Glendale will then conclude tournament play at Providence High in Burbank on Feb. 23.
