Hoover Boys’ Basketball Survives CIF Opener With Overtime Win

The Hoover High School varsity boys’ basketball team secured a narrow 72-70 overtime victory at Savanna High of Anaheim in its CIF Southern Section Division V-AA opener on Feb. 7.
Senior Zack Van Patten poured in 25 points, while sophomore Justin Herrera registered 20 points. Junior Jaden Duncan scored 11 points, while senior Hagop Demirjian finished with nine points. Senior Michael Shamoun recorded five points, while senior Ethan Davis chipped in two points.
The Tornados concluded the regular season and Pacific League play with a 57-55 victory at Glendale on Feb. 1 as Van Patten finished with 21 points.
Shamoun tallied 13 points, Demirjian contributed nine points and Herrera produced seven points. Duncan had five points, while Davis scored two points.
Hoover (14-12 overall) hosted San Bernardino (9-17 overall) for its CIF second-round matchup on Feb. 9; the game ended after the Glendale News-Press’ deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, the Tornados would advance to the quarterfinals and meet either Temecula Prep of Winchester (14-10) or Buckley High of Sherman Oaks (17-10) on Feb. 13.

CRESCENTA VALLEY

The Falcons lost at Trabuco Hills 79-61 in its CIF Southern Section Division II-AA opener on Feb. 7. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Crescenta Valley concluded the regular season and Pacific League play with a 60-48 victory at Arcadia on Feb. 1.
Senior Derek Najarian racked up 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while junior Vaughn Zargarian poured in 20 points with four assists, three rebounds and one steal. Senior Logan Freemon registered nine rebounds, six points, two steals and one assist, while senior Grikor Moghoyan tallied five points, five rebounds and three assists. Senior Nick Altounian chipped in four points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, while junior Michael Sahagian recorded four points, two steals and one assist. Meanwhile, senior Lachlan Blunt and sophomore Arman Bedrossian each had one rebound.
Crescenta Valley finished the campaign second in league with a 12-2 record (22-7 overall).

GLENDALE
The Nitros lost at Carter High in Rialto, 95-86, in its CIF Southern Section Division IV-A opener on Feb. 7 as sophomore Mason Manalo amassed 31 points.
Junior Joshua Ballard poured in 19 points, while junior Roman Ramirez scored 11 points. Senior Rein Rigor recorded eight points, while senior Anthony Agakhanyan tallied seven points. Seniors Christian Pierre and Cayden Mailed each finished with four points, while senior David Davtian scored two points.
Glendale concluded the regular season and Pacific League play with a 57-55 loss to visiting Hoover High on Feb. 1.
Rigor poured in 14 points, while senior Haig Jivalagian scored 10 points. Davtian finished with nine points, junior Chris Martirosyan recorded eight points and Pierre tallied seven points. Mailed registered four points, while senior Mika Petrosian chipped in three points.
The Nitros finished the campaign fifth in league with a 5-9 record (15-14 overall).
