Glendale Cruises in CIF Opener

The Glendale High School varsity girls’ volleyball team swept host Valley View High of Moreno Valley, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24, in their CIF Southern Section Division VI first-round match on Oct. 19. Glendale, seeded No. 2 in Division VI, hosts Highland High of Palmdale in a second-round matchup on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.
The Nitros (31-6 overall, 11-3 in league) swept visiting Hoover High, 25-13, 25-12, 25-13, in its regular season finale on Oct. 12, extending its win streak to an impressive 23 matches.
Junior Aleina Manaois racked up 18 kills, while junior Emerson Whiting amassed 38 assists.
Freshman Eileen Herrera finished with seven kills and four digs, while senior Caitlyn Hanzal contributed seven kills and two blocks. Senior Maya Hamo tallied five aces, four kills and two blocks, while senior Anush Melikyan recorded three kills.


CRESCENTA VALLEY

Crescenta Valley High School junior co-captain Isabel Haytayan, seen in a match earlier in the season, tallied eight kills and four digs during a Pacific League match against Arcadia on Oct. 12.

The Falcons fell to Arcadia, 25-17, 23-25, 13-25, 17-25, in a Pacific League match on Oct. 12.
Junior Caden Pinto racked up 25 assists, 13 digs and six kills, while junior co-captain Sofia Shin contributed 14 digs, five assists and one ace. Freshman Adelyn Lopez finished with eight kills, four digs and two aces, junior co-captain Isabel Haytayan tallied eight kills and four digs, and sophomore Hayden Shirvanian recorded seven kills and three digs. Junior Eva Portnaya chipped in five kills, while senior Emma Santa Ana produced two kills and two digs. Senior Natalie Avakian registered 10 digs and one ace, senior Cameron Ouye collected eight digs and one ace, and senior Sophia Aroyan was credited with five digs and two aces. Senior Pilar Garcia notched three digs, while senior Jessica Romero had one ace and one dig.
Crescenta Valley concluded the regular season by competing in the Chatsworth Tournament on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14, finishing with a 5-2 record as Shin was named to the all-tournament team.
The Falcons posted wins against Palisades High of Pacific Palisades, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12; Valencia, 25-14, 25-16; Taft High of Woodland Hills, 27-25, 23-25, 15-10; Eagle Rock High of Los Angeles, 25-19, 25-10; and Calabasas, 25-16, 25-14. CV’s only losses came against Notre Dame Academy of Los Angeles, 24-26, 8-25, and Royal High of Simi Valley, 17-25, 19-25. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.


HOOVER
The Tornados were swept at Glendale, 13-25, 12-25, 13-25, in their season finale on Oct. 12. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Hoover finished the campaign last in the Pacific League standings with an 0-14 record (1-23 overall).
