Glendale Stretches Win Streak With Pasadena Sweep

The Glendale High School varsity girls’ volleyball team swept visiting Pasadena, 25-11, 25-23, 25-15, in a Pacific League showdown on Oct. 10, extending its win streak to 22 consecutive matches.
Aleina Manaois racked up 22 kills, while Emerson Whiting tallied 30 assists. Mika Valiente recorded seven blocks and five kills, Eileen Herrera produced five kills and four aces, and Arianna Vargas finished with 14 digs and two aces.
The Nitros won the 33rd annual Sylmar Tournament on Oct. 7, finishing with a perfect 7-0 record after defeating Girls Academic Leadership Academy of Los Angele, 25-22 in the championship match.
Manaois, who racked up 51 kills, 29 digs, 13 aces and 12 blocks, and Vargas, who recorded 47 digs and 18 aces, were each selected to the all-tournament team.
Whiting amassed 141 assists, 14 blocks, eight kills, eight aces and seven digs. Herrera contributed 33 kills, 17 aces, 13 blocks and 12 digs, while Valiente finished with 30 kills, 28 blocks and three digs. Additionally, Loveneet Kaur chipped in 14 blocks, 12 kills, seven digs and two aces.
Glendale defeated Birmingham High of Lake Balboa 25-20 in the semifinals after beating Marshall High of Los Angeles 25-18 in the quarterfinals. The Nitros also swept pool play without losing a set, defeating King/Drew High of Los Angeles, 25-11, 25-9; Sylmar High’s junior varsity team, 25-4, 25-13; Eagle Rock High of Los Angeles, 25-20, 25-10; and Mendez High of Los Angels, 25-10, 25-14.
Glendale routed visiting Hawkins High of Los Angeles, 25-4, 25-8, 25-4, in a nonleague matchup on Oct. 6.
Manaois notched nine kills and nine aces, while Whiting was credited with 20 assists. Vargas chipped in seven aces and five digs, while Herrera had eight digs and three aces.
The Nitros swept host Muir High in Pasadena, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19, in a league contest on Oct. 5.
Whiting racked up 36 assists, six digs and three aces, while Manaois tallied 15 kills and eight digs. Herrera recorded 10 kills, Valiente chipped in nine kills and Vargas finished with 14 digs.
Glendale (29-6 overall, 10-3 in league) concluded the regular season by hosting Hoover High on Oct. 12; the match ended after the Glendale News-Press’ deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.

CRESCENTA VALLEY

Crescenta Valley High School sophomore Hayden Shirvanian and the Falcons posted a pair of Pacific League sweeps over Muir and Hoover high schools.

The Falcons posted a pair of Pacific League sweeps over Muir High in Pasadena, 25-10, 25-11, 25-8, and Hoover High of Glendale, 25-9, 25-7, 25-12. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
CVHS (27-4, 11-2) concluded the regular season by competing in the Chatsworth Tournament on Oct. 13 and 14. The CIF Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.

HOOVER
The Tornados were swept in a pair of Pacific League road matchups at Burbank, 16-25, 15-25, 15-25, and Crescenta Valley, 9-25, 7-25, 12-25. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press by the Hoover coaching staff.
Hoover (1-21, 0-13) concluded the regular season at Glendale on Oct. 12; the league match ended after the Glendale News-Press’ deadline and will be included in next week’s issue.
