Glendale Stuns League-Leader Arcadia in Thriller

The Glendale High School varsity girls’ volleyball team took Arcadia to the distance in a Pacific League match on Oct. 3, upsetting the league leaders in a five-game thriller, 13-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-13.
Glendale junior Aleina Manaois tallied 24 kills, 12 digs, two blocks and two aces to help the Nitros extend their win streak to 11 matches with the reverse sweep over the Apaches, who were previously unbeaten in league play heading into Tuesday’s match.
Nitros freshman Eileen Herrera contributed 15 kills, six digs and two aces. Junior Emerson Whiting tallied 39 assists and three blocks, junior Mika Valiente produced 12 blocks and four kills, and senior Arianna Vargas recorded 18 digs.
The Nitros posted their 12th straight victory by defeating visiting Pasadena in four games, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, in a league matchup on Oct. 4.
Whiting amassed 43 assists, six digs and five blocks, Manaois finished with 15 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, and Herrera registered 15 kills and six digs. Vargas was credited with 11 digs and four assists, junior Breanna Cuellar chipped in seven blocks and four digs, and Valiente had five blocks and four kills.
Glendale previously swept visiting Muir High of Pasadena, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20, in a league matchup on Sept. 29 as Manaois contributed 10 kills, six digs, five aces and three blocks.
Whiting racked up 25 assists, six digs and three aces while Vargas produced 11 digs and four assists. Herrera finished with nine digs, five kills and four aces while Valiente chipped in five kills.
The Nitros swept visiting Burbank, 25-11, 25-11, 25-13, in a league contest on Sept. 28.
Herrera recorded 15 kills and six digs, Manaois tallied 13 kills and two aces, and Whiting registered 26 assists and four digs. Valiente collected five kills and four blocks, Cuellar was credited with four blocks and three kills, and Vargas had four assists and three digs.
Third-place Glendale (19-6 overall, 8-3 in league) will host Pasadena for a league match on Oct. 10 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Hoover High in its regular-season finale on Oct. 12.

CRESCENTA VALLEY

The Falcons swept host Burbank, 25-17, 25-14, 25-15, in a Pacific League matchup on Oct. 3.
Junior Caden Pinto racked up 17 assists, five kills, five digs and four aces, junior co-captain Sofia Shin finished with 16 digs, three aces and three assists, and senior Jessica Romero tallied 10 assists, three digs and one ace. Junior Eva Portnaya registered seven kills and one dig, while senior Sophia Aroyan chipped in five aces and five digs. Senior Pilar Garcia contributed six digs and one ace, while senior Cameron Ouye produced four digs and one ace. Sophomore Hayden Shirvanian recorded four kills, two digs and one ace, while junior Hannah Wyroski collected four kills and one dig. Senior Emma Santa Ana notched five kills, while junior Jamie Shoemake and freshman Adelyn Lopez each had four kills. Senior Natalie Avakian was credited with eight digs, senior Sofia Santiago had two digs and junior Noelani Joo had one kill.
CVHS swept visiting Burroughs High of Burbank, 25-23, 25-12, 25-19, in a league contest on Sept. 28 as junior co-captain Isabel Haytayan racked up 17 kills, five blocks and one dig.
Pinto amassed 26 assists, seven digs and one kill, while Shin finished with 18 digs, four aces and two assists. Shirvanian contributed eight digs, six kills, two aces and one block, Lopez registered five kills and four digs, and Santa Ana chipped in four kills and one dig. Portnaya produced two kills, one block and one dig, while Romero tallied four assists, one kill and one dig. Shoemake recorded four digs and one kill, Garcia collected seven digs and two aces, and Ouye notched nine digs. Avakian had five digs, Wyroski was credited with two digs and Santiago had one ace.
Second-place Crescenta Valley (25-4, 9-2) will visit Muir High in Pasadena for a league match on Oct. 10 at 3:45 p.m. before concluding the regular season at Arcadia on Oct. 12.

HOOVER

The Tornados were swept by visiting Pasadena, 15-25, 14-25, 25-27, in a Pacific League match on Oct. 3. Hoover was also previously swept at Muir High in Pasadena, 19-25, 15-25, 19-25, in a league contest on Sept. 28. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press by the Hoover coaching staff.
The Tornados (1-19, 0-11) will visit Burbank for a league matchup on Oct. 10 at 3:45 p.m. before visiting Glendale for their regular-season finale on Oct. 12.
