CV Tops Glendale to Begin League Campaign

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated host Glendale in four games, 26-24, 15-25, 25-12, 25-19, in the two team’s Pacific League opener on Tuesday as junior Caden Pinto racked up 37 assists, nine digs, four kills and two blocks.
Junior captain Isabel Haytayan registered 13 kills, three blocks and one dig, while junior captain Sofia Shin collected 20 digs, two aces and one assist. Freshman Adelyn Lopez finished with eight kills, six digs and one ace, junior Hannah Wyroski had seven kills and seven digs, and junior Eva Portnaya produced seven kills and two blocks. Senior Pilar Garcia contributed 13 digs and four aces while senior Cameron Ouye recorded 12 digs and one ace. Senior Sophia Aroyan had eight digs and one ace while senior Emma Santa Ana had three kills. Senior Sofia Santiago notched four digs while junior Jamie Shoemake had two digs.
The Falcons lost at Chaminade High in West Hills in four games, 10-25, 22-25, 25-19, 14-25, in a nonleague match on Monday as Pinto racked up 25 assists, 12 digs, three kills and two blocks.
Wyroski collected seven kills, five digs, one block and one assist while Haytayan tallied nine kills and one dig. Shin produced 19 digs and one assist while Ouye had 10 digs. Senior Natalie Avakian contributed nine digs and one ace, Portnaya recorded five kills, one block and one dig, and Lopez finished with four kills and two aces. Garcia registered five digs and one ace, while Lopez and Santiago each had three digs. Aroyan notched one dig and one assist, Shoemake had one kill and one block, and Santa Ana had one kill.
CVHS previously won the Pasadena Polytechnic Tournament after defeating host Polytechnic, 27-25, 15-25, 15-13, in its tournament finale on Aug. 26. Shin, who recorded 29 digs, 15 aces and three assists, was named the tournament MVP. Pinto, who amassed 66 assists, 19 digs, five kills, five aces and one block, and Haytayan, who collected 18 kills, five blocks and one dig, were each named to the all-tournament team.
The Falcons finished tournament pool play with a perfect 3-0 record after posting sweeps against Ramona Covent High of Alhambra (25-16, 25-19), Monrovia (25-15, 25-15) and Maranatha High of Pasadena (25-18, 25-17).
Across four tournament matches, Lopez racked up 19 kills, nine aces, five digs and one block while Wyroski tallied 17 kills, two digs and one block. Santiago produced 19 digs, seven aces and one kill while Avakian finished with 13 digs and seven aces. Ouye registered 11 assists, three digs and two kills while Portnaya had 11 kills and two blocks. Garcia notched 10 digs and three aces while Santa Ana had 10 kills. Aroyan had seven digs and one ace, junior Noelani Joo had five kills and one dig, and Shoemake had four kills and one dig.
CVHS previously defeated visiting Granada Hills Charter of Granada Hills in five games a nonleague match, 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 24-26, 15-9. Pinto amassed 30 assists, 16 digs, nine kills, two blocks and one ace while Shin racked up 26 digs, five assists and two aces. Haytayan registered 11 kills and four blocks, Wyroski tallied seven digs and five kills and Ouye had seven digs. Garcia finished with nine digs and one ace, Avakian recorded six digs and one ace, and Santiago collected five digs and three aces. Santa Ana notched eight kills and one block while sophomore Hayden Shirvanian had four kills and four digs. Shoemake produced three kills, one ace and one dig while Portnaya had three kills and one block. Lopez had four digs and two kills, Joo had one block and Aroyan had one dig.
Crescenta Valley (8-2 overall, 1-0 in league) will visit Burroughs High in Burbank for a league match on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Burbank on Thursday.


GLENDALE

Nitros junior Aleina Manaois registered 12 kills and three aces in Glendale’s four-game loss, 24-26, 25-15, 12-25, 19-25, against Crescenta Valley High in Pacific League play on Tuesday. Nitros junior Emerson Whiting finished with 20 assists, while senior Arianna Vargas tallied eight digs, junior Breanna Cuellar contributed eight blocks and junior Mika Valiente recorded six blocks.
Glendale (5-4 overall, 0-1 in league) will visit Burbank for a league matchup on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. before visiting Arcadia on Thursday.


HOOVER

The Tornados lost 3-0 in their Pacific League opener on Tuesday at Burroughs High in Burbank.
The Tornados previously suffered nonleague losses against Rio Hondo Prep of Arcadia (8-25, 14-25, 11-25), Marshall High of Pasadena (12-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 9-15), and San Gabriel Mission of San Gabriel (19-25, 22-25, 18-25). Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press by the Hoover coaching staff.
Hoover (1-5 overall, 0-1 in league) will host Muir High of Pasadena for a league contest on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Pasadena on Thursday.
