Falcons, Nitros Collect Pacific League Victories

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity boys’ volleyball team defeated visiting Arcadia, 25-21, 27-25, 25-27, 25-22, to secure the program’s first Pacific League title since 2004.
Senior Drew Puttler amassed 54 assists, nine digs, four blocks and two kills, senior Jason Nelson racked up 17 kills, six digs, one block and one ace, and junior Logan Freemon registered 17 kills, two blocks, one assist and one dig. Senior Will Allen tallied 13 kills, six blocks and four digs while senior Dylan Hsu finished with 14 digs, three aces and one assist. Senior Will Chin collected seven kills, one block and one dig, sophomore Colin Walley produced seven blocks, four kills and one assist, and junior Matt Hong had three aces and one dig.
The Falcons swept their CV Tournament last weekend after collecting wins against Simi Valley, 25-19, 25-21, Eagle Rock High of Los Angeles, 26-24, 25-17, La Cañada, 25-14, 25-18, Gabrielino High of San Gabriel, 25-14, 25-23, Flintridge Prep of La Cañada Flintridge, 25-15, 25-18, and Thousand Oaks, 25-14, 25-20. Allen was named tournament MVP after amassing 48 kills, 23 digs, five aces, five blocks and one assist while Freemon was selected to the all-tournament team after racking up 42 kills, 10 aces, seven digs, two blocks and two assists. Assistant coach Evan Nelson said the entire CVHS bench was also named to the all-tournament team for being loud and rowdy for all six matches.
Across all tournament contests, Puttler amassed 122 assists, nine kills, seven assists, five aces and five blocks, Jason Nelson racked up 32 kills, 19 digs, 10 aces, five blocks and one assist, and Hsu registered 35 digs, eight assists and three aces. Walley tallied 15 kills, nine blocks, three digs and one assist, Chin collected 14 kills, four blocks, two digs and one assist, and Hong produced 14 assists, five digs and two aces. Junior Ben Hart recorded six kills, two blocks, two digs and one ace. Senior Henry Guske finished with two digs, one ace and one kill. Junior Mason Park had one dig, junior Jackson Roehr had one ace and senior Jonathan Won had one assist.
The Falcons recently swept host Burbank, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17, in a league match on Tuesday.
Puttler registered 17 assists, one kill and one dig, Allen tallied seven kills, two aces, two blocks and two digs, and Hong recorded seven assists, two aces, one kill and one dig. Jason Nelson had five kills, two aces and one block while Freemon finished with four kills, four digs and two aces. Chin produced two kills and one block, Guske had two kills and one dig, and Park collected two digs and one kill. Hart had two kills, Walley had one kill, and Roehr and Hsu each had two digs.
League champion CVHS (27-7 overall, 9-0 in league) recently concluded the regular season by hosting Burroughs High of Burbank; the league match ended after the Glendale News-Press’ deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. The CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m.

Glendale High School senior Ergueen Herrera registered 14 kills and 13 digs to help the Nitros beat Pasadena in a Pacific League match on Tuesday.

The Nitros defeated host Pasadena, 25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, securing at least a fourth-place tie in Pacific League play on Tuesday.
Senior Ergueen Herrera registered 14 kills, 13 digs, three blocks and one ace while sophomore Quan Tran racked up 22 digs, 11 kills, four blocks and one ace. Sophomore Caleb Shimasaki produced 16 assists and nine digs while junior Koko Haboian recorded 15 assists, six digs and two aces. Junior Vraj Bhagat tallied seven blocks, four digs and three kills, sophomore Tad Whiting finished with six blocks, four kills and three digs, and junior Thomas Gonzales collected four kills, two digs and two blocks.
Glendale previously swept visiting Burbank in a league match, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19. Haboian recorded 17 assists and eight digs while Herrera racked up 15 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Tran tallied eight kills and eight digs, Whiting finished with nine blocks, three aces, three kills and two digs, and Bhagat registered eight blocks, four digs and two kills. Gonzales produced four kills, two digs and two blocks, Shimasaki had seven assists and three digs, and junior Nathan Francisco collected seven digs and two aces.
The fourth-place Nitros (15-7 overall, 3-6 in league) will conclude the regular season by competing in the Sylmar Tournament today. The CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets will be released on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m.
