The Hoover High School varsity boys’ basketball team lost its nonleague season opener against visiting San Marino, 66-60, on Wednesday night.
Justin Herrera led the Tornados with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, while Zack Van Patten poured in 17 points. James Akerman recorded 11 points, Jenghiz Van Patten scored seven points and Hagop Demirjian tallied six points on a pair of 3-pointers.
The Tornados (0-1 overall) will battle Flintridge Prep of La Cañada Flintridge in their San Gabriel Tournament opener on Monday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m.
The Nitros lost their nonleague season opener against visiting Blair High of Pasadena, 82-67, Monday night. Junior Christian Pierre led the team with 14 points while senior Dior Pierre poured in 11 points. Junior Haig Jivalagian tallied nine points, senior Denzell Lora registered eight points and senior Nico Zadorian finished with seven points. Sophomore Josh Ballard scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers, junior Mika Petrosian had six points, and senior Tino Zadorian recorded four points.
Glendale (0-1 overall) will visit Royal High in Simi Valley for a nonleague game on Monday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m.
The Falcons lost to Simi Valley, 74-65, in a Cantwell-Sacred Heart tournament game on Wednesday. Senior Mikail Grigoryan poured in 23 points with five rebounds and five assists, while senior Armen Yetenkian posted 13 points.
CVHS previously won its season and tournament opener over Upland, 65-58, as Yetenkian registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Grigoryan racked up 16 points, five boards and four assists, sophomore Vaughn Zargarian recorded 15 points on five 3-pointers, and senior Sebastian Tahmasian tallied 10 points and three rebounds.
Crescenta Valley (1-1 overall) will compete in a tournament with its opening contest on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
