Falcons Lose Season Opener; Glendale Competes in Tourney

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity boys’ water polo team nearly finished the comeback but was ultimately edged by San Marino in its season opener, 13-11, at Glendale High School’s Aquatic Center on Wednesday.
The Falcons (0-1 overall) jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter before San Marino battled back to regain a 5-4 advantage at halftime. San Marino extended its lead in the third and fourth quarters before a comeback effort by CVHS fell two goals short after outscoring SMHS 6-4 in the last quarter.
Sebastian Rivera and Levon Babayan each scored four goals for CVHS, while Michael Petersen, Daron Alexanians and Jacob Choe each tallied one goal. Goalie Logan Freemon registered seven saves in the cage.

GLENDALE

The Nitros lost its fifth straight game after being edged by visiting Pasadena Poly, 7-6, in a nonleague matchup on Tuesday.
Junior Artin Ghazaryan and sophomore Robert Lazaryan each scored a pair of goals for GHS while seniors Arthur Ter-Matevosyan and Gregory Carrillo each tallied one goal.
Glendale previously lost a nonleague game to visiting Fullerton, 10-8, on Monday as Carrillo led with three goals. Senior Andrew Azizian and Artin Ghazaryan each scored twice, while Arthur Ter-Matevosyan had one goal.
The Nitros competed in the two-day Corona Tournament playing in the Platinum Bracket last week. Glendale fell in both of Saturday’s tournament matchups, losing 17-7 to Yucaipa and 7-6 to Temecula Valley.
The Nitros opened tournament play with a pair of victories, ending the day with an 18-9 rout over Culver City, as Lazaryan, Azizian and Artin Ghazaryan matched each other’s offensive production with three goals each. Ter-Matevosyan, Carrillo and senior Arno Ghazaryan each produced a pair of goals, while junior Narek Azarian and sophomore August Kalaba each scored once.
Glendale opened tournament play by dominating Centennial High of Corona, 15-8, earlier on Thursday, as Carrillo led with a team-high four goals. Ter-Matevosyan and Artin Ghazaryan each scored three goals while Lazaryan registered a pair of goals. Azizian, Kalaba and junior Edgar Abnussi each recorded one goal.
The Nitros were edged 9-8 by visiting Los Altos High of Hacienda Heights in between tournament play on Friday. Ter-Matevosyan notched a team-high four goals, Artin Ghazaryan scored a pair of goals, and Lazaryan and junior Andrew Klujian each tallied one goal.
Glendale (3-6 overall) will visit Etiwanda for a nonleague game on Monday, Sept. 12, at 3:30 p.m.

HOOVER

The Tornados had a matchup scheduled at South Pasadena on Tuesday; however, it was canceled due to the current heat wave. Hoover (1-6 overall) will visit Warren High in Downey for a nonleague game on Monday, Sept. 12, at 3 p.m.
