CVHS, Glendale, Hoover Athletes Honored

The spring sports season ended for Glendale-area high schools without a championship but a cadre of athletes competing in their respective sports had outstanding individual campaigns.

  • CVHS sophomore Perri Derian was an All-Pacific League second-team selection.
  • Hoover freshman Evelyn Ortiz received an all-league honorable mention.
  • Glendale senior Asa Yoshioka earned an All-Pacific League first-team selection.
  • CVHS senior David Kim and his doubles teammate senior Ben Yeom (not pictured) received All-Pacific League honors.

BASEBALL

Glendale High School senior Milan Bugarin was selected to the All-Pacific League first team, while junior Francisco Malagon earned a second-team bid. Meanwhile, Glendale senior Daniel Villela earned honorable mention. Former head coach Marcus Whithorne, who stepped down after this season to spend more time with family, was named the co-coach of the year.
Crescenta Valley High School senior Jameson Ferraro earned the highest honor of the Falcon baseball players, making the all-league first team, while CV seniors Kris McCollum and Zack Petersen were selected to the second team and junior Connor Campbell was honorable mention.
Hoover High School junior Jose Mendez earned the Tornados’ lone baseball honor as he was selected honorable mention.

SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley senior Isabelle Jamgotchian and junior Lily Hinkle each earned All-Pacific League first-team honors, while a pair of Falcons, sophomores Perri Derian and Anais Ochoa, had second-team selections. Meanwhile, Jaiden Sabelis was honorable mention.
Glendale senior Christine Raj was the lone Nitro selected to the all-league first team, while freshman Natalie Minkler made the second team and sophomore Jazmin Combs received honorable mention.
Hoover freshman Evelyn Ortiz received an honorable mention.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Behind CV’s head coach Jan Sakonju, who was named the coach of the year, several Falcon swimmers received All-Pacific League first-team honors, including Sean Rho who was named swimmer of the meet. Michael Petersen, Jacob Choe, Alec Puttler and Arthur Movsesyan were selected for the 200-yard freestyle relay, while Ian Rho, Movsesyan, Dylan Wee and Sean Rho made the first team in the 400 freestyle.
Sean Rho made the first team in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, while Ian Rho made the first team in the 500 freestyle.
Evan Yi, Sean Rho, Wee and Petersen made the second team in the 200 medley relay, Wee in the 200 I.M., Petersen in the 50 freestyle and Wee in the 100 backstroke.
Hoover’s Massimo Reyna had a terrific swim season as he racked up first-team honors in the 200- and 100-yard frees.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Three Falcons picked up All-Pacific League first-team honors, including Jungmin Yoon in the 200-yard I.M. and 100-yard backstroke, and Alice Kim in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Yoon, Kim, Hasmik Ohanesian and Chelsea Hong, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Hong, Yoon, Gabrielle Young and Kyra Freemon each earned second-team selections. Meanwhile, Hong made the second team in the 100 and 50-yard freestyles.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Crescenta Valley’s 4×400 meter relay team of Jaeger Wyss, Diego Pravikoff, Parker Simmons and Max Ruiz earned All-Pacific League first-team honors, and Rowan FitzGerald was selected to the first team in the 800 meters.
Meanwhile, Ruiz, FitzGerald and Simmons each earned second-team honors in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, respectively.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Crescenta Valley’s Reese Sion and Rachel Arias each earned first-team honors in the 3,200 meters and the 100-meter hurdles. Meanwhile, the 4×100 meter really team of Arias, Teleya Blunt, Keira Calaguas and Rachel Park, and the 4×400 meter really team of Arias, Blunt, Sion and Ava Martin were each selected for second-team honors. Blunt was also selected to the second team in the 200 and 400 meters, Sion made the second team in the 1,600 meters and Arias earned second-team honors in the 300 hurdles.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

CVHS senior Evan Boyle was the lone Falcon to post All-Pacific League first-team honors while a pair of Falcons, seniors Noah Kim and Ethan Paransky, were both selected to the second-team. Junior Jason Nelson was honorable mention.
Glendale senior Asa Yoshioka earned a first-team selection, junior Ergueen Herrera made the second-team and senior Nathan Hillyer was honorable mention.

BOYS’ TENNIS

The CVHS doubles team of seniors David Kim and Ben Yeom were the lone Glendale-area tennis players to receive All-Pacific League honors.
