Canine Cooper Rises in Glendale Fire Department Ranks

Glendale Fire Department’s first certified wellness canine, Cooper, was among 32 department members recognized by Fire Chief Greg Fish for being promoted through the ranks.

At the June 6 ceremony, Cooper, a two-year-old goldendoodle, received his official department badge.

Led by his handler, Korin Peltier, a Verdugo Fire communications dispatcher, Cooper is a decorated canine with three American Kennel Club certifications and a Therapy Dog Certification.

With his Therapy Dog Certification, Cooper is trained specifically to reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression and to lessen trauma from crucial incidents for GFD’s first responders.

Additionally, Peltier is peer support and critical incident stress management trained and has her certification in psychological first aid and pet first aid.

“When GFD members see Cooper, their faces light up. He brings joy to everyone he meets and boosts morale,” said Cheryl Getuiza, the department’s community liaison officer. “… We are so excited to watch Korin and Cooper grow and change lives.”
