Boys’ Volleyball: Falcons Fall in CIF Opener, Nitros Drop Wildcard Matchup

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity boys’ volleyball team was swept at Fountain Valley, 24-26, 13-25, 12-25, in its CIF Southern Section Division III opener on April 25.
The Falcons previously ended the regular season with a four-game loss at Burroughs High in Burbank, 25-19, 24-26, 20-25, 19-25, in a Pacific League match on April 18. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Crescenta Valley finished the campaign third in league with a 6-4 record (23-12 overall).

The Nitros lost in straight sets at Campbell Hall High in North Hollywood, 19-25, 22-25, 18-25, in their CIF Southern Section Division V wildcard match on April 23.
Caleb Shimasaki finished with 19 assists, four digs and three blocks, while Benjamin Salmeron registered 12 blocks and six kills. Quan Tran produced six kills, two blocks and one ace, while Tad Whiting recorded four blocks and three kills. Nick Ramirez contributed three kills and three blocks, while Thomas Gonzales tallied three kills and one block. Ibrahim Alnaqib had one kill and one block, while Isaiah Mascardo collected four digs.
Glendale swept host Muir High in Pasadena, 25-20, 25-12, 25-13, in their regular-season finale on April 19.
Whiting produced 12 kills and nine blocks, while Koko Haboian was credited with 18 assists and four digs. Shimasaki tallied 13 assists, three digs and one block, Ramirez finished with eight kills, six blocks and six digs, and Alnaqib registered 10 digs and seven kills. Cory Graham contributed five kills and five blocks, while Gonzales chipped in four kills. Tran collected seven digs, while Raul Martinez recorded one kill, one block and one dig.
The Nitros posted a thrilling five-game victory over visiting Pasadena, 25-23, 25-14, 27-29, 21-25, 15-10, in a Pacific League match on April 18.
Haboian was credited with 25 assists and 11 digs, Ramirez produced 20 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, and Whiting racked up 16 kills, 13 blocks and three digs. Shimasaki tallied 18 assists, six blocks and five digs, while Tran contributed 13 digs and six assists. Alnaqib registered 14 digs and 10 kills, Salmeron recorded 14 blocks and eight kills, and Gonzales had nine blocks and eight kills.
Glendale finished the campaign fourth in league with a 3-7 record (16-12 overall).
