Fluffy Pup Extinguishes Stress, Anxiety at Glendale Fire Department

Cooper, “Wellness Canine”

The Glendale Fire Department celebrated the one-year anniversary of its first-ever certified “Wellness Canine,” Cooper, on Monday.
In his first year on the job, Cooper has helped reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression and helped lessen trauma from critical incidents for all GFD employees.
With his handler, Verdugo Fire Communication dispatcher Korin Peltier, by his side, Cooper earned his Therapy Dog Certification, Canine Good Citizen, AKC Community Canine and AKC Urban Canine certifications.
A study out of UCLA Health on therapy animals documented physical and mental benefits, such as lowered blood pressure and a release of hormones like phenylethylamine that regulates overall mood.
“Way to go, Cooper. We love you for bringing us so much love and smiles,” the department said.
