Boys’ Volleyball: Glendale Secures Consecutive Sweeps

The Glendale High School varsity boys’ volleyball team swept host Maranatha High in Pasadena, 25-12, 25-14, 25-20, in a nonleague match on March 4.
Junior Quan Tran registered 10 kills, three blocks and two digs, while junior Tad Whiting tallied eight kills, three blocks and two aces. Senior Ibrahim Alnaqib contributed six kills and one ace, while junior Benjamin Salmeron produced four kills and four blocks. Junior Caleb Shimasaki racked up 19 assists, four aces and two blocks, senior Koko Haboian recorded 11 assists and four digs, and freshman Isaiah Mascardo had seven digs, two assists and one ace.
The Nitros swept visiting South El Monte, 25-12, 25-12, 25-12, in a nonleague match on Feb. 29.
Whiting registered 11 kills and five blocks, while Salmeron tallied six kills and two blocks. Alnaqib produced four kills, two assists and two aces, junior Raul Martinez contributed four kills and one dig, and senior Nick Ramirez recorded three kills and two aces. Haboian was credited with 15 assists and one ace, Shimasaki tallied 13 assists and two aces, and Mascardo collected three digs.
Glendale (6-2 overall) will host Burbank for a Pacific League match on March 12 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Arcadia on March 14.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons defeated host South Pasadena in five games, 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 15-12, in a nonleague match on March 5.
Crescenta Valley competed in the Las Vegas Invitational on March 1 and 2, finishing with a 5-3 record.
The Falcons posted wins against Del Sol High of Las Vegas, Nevada, 25-20, 25-17, Sierra Vista High of Las Vegas, 23-25, 25-20, 15-6, and Desert Oasis High of Las Vegas, 2-1, on the final day of tournament play. Crescenta Valley lost to Canyon View High of Waddell, Arizona, 25-17, 20-25, 12-15, and Sage Creek High of Carlsbad, 25-19, 23-25, 12-25, in a pair of tournament matches on March 2.
Crescenta Valley opened tournament action on March 1 with a pair of sweeps against Las Vegas, 25-12, 25-23, and Southeast Career Tech High in Las Vegas, 26-24, 26-24. The Falcons ended the first day of tournament play with a two-game loss against Shadow Ridge High of Las Vegas, 23-25, 16-15. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
The Falcons (14-4) will visit Pasadena for a Pacific League match on March 12 at 3:45 p.m. before traveling to Burbank on March 14.

HOOVER
The Tornados lost in straight sets at Pasadena, 8-25, 9-25, 10-25, in a nonleague match on March 5. Hoover was previously swept at Marshall Fundamental in Pasadena, 16-25, 16-25, 13-25, in a nonleague match on Feb. 22. Individual statistics were not reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Hoover (0-2) will host Glendale for a nonleague match on March 25 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Compton Early College on March 27.
