Softball: Hoover Carries Win Streak Into League Opener

The Glendale High School varsity softball team lost at Westridge School in Pasadena 8-4 in a nonleague game on March 5. Junior Natalie Minkler, who had a hit and an RBI at the plate, pitched a six-inning complete game with nine strikeouts.
Junior Jade Marquez recorded a hit and a run, senior Faith Alvarez scored twice, stole a base and walked once, and sophomore Sky Smoot stole three bases, walked once and scored a run. Senior Jazmin Combs walked once and stole a base, sophomore Loraly Cano walked once, and junior Jade Marquez stole a base.
The Nitros suffered a 7-4 loss at San Marino in a nonleague game on Feb. 29, as Minkler pitched a six-inning complete game with 10 strikeouts.
Sophomore Rachel Francis went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base, Alvarez recorded a hit, three stolen bases and a run, and senior Michelle Shadanyan and Marquez each tallied a base hit. Sophomore Carla Bedolla walked twice and scored a pair of runs, sophomore Sareen Hagopian and Smoot each walked once, and Cano tallied an RBI.
Glendale (4-6 overall) will open Pacific League action at Pasadena on March 12 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Muir High of Pasadena on March 14.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons traveled to Bullhead, Arizona, for the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions on March 1 and 2, finishing with a 1-3 record.
Crescenta Valley routed Greenway High of Phoenix, Arizona, 11-1, in its tournament finale on March 2 as senior Perri Derian pitched a two-inning complete game with three strikeouts. Junior Alexa Johnson went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, a run, a stolen base and a walk, while senior Jaiden Sabelis went 2-for-2 with a run and a walk. Sophomore Kate Barnes had a double, three RBIs and a run, while senior Anais Ochoa recorded a double, two runs and an RBI. Junior Megumi Ono finished with a hit and two RBIs, junior Mila Reddy a hit, two walks and a run, and junior Jasmine Hernandez and freshman Chloe Mulcahey each a hit and a run.
The Falcons lost to Chino Hills 10-3 in a tournament game on March 2 as junior Carley Mulcahey pitched a seven-inning complete game with two strikeouts.
Reddy recorded a solo home run, two walks and an additional run, Hernandez finished with a hit and an RBI, and Derian and Ono each tallied a base hit. Chloe Mulcahey walked once and scored a run, Ochoa walked once, and senior Ariel Beltran was credited with an RBI.
Crescenta Valley suffered a 9-3 loss against Mater Dei High in Santa Ana to end the first day of tournament play on March 1.
Reddy went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks, while Sabelis went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Johnson produced a double, a run and a walk, while Ono contributed a double and a walk. Ochoa tallied a hit and a run, while Hernandez walked once.
The Falcons lost to Capistrano Valley High of Mission Viejo 6-3 in their tournament opener on March 1.
Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Ono went 2-for-2 with a walk. Barnes recorded a double and a run, while junior Hannah Wyroski produced a double. Hernandez finished with a hit, a run and a walk, Carley Mulcahey registered a hit and an RBI, and Sabelis and Reddy each tallied a base hit.
Crescenta Valley was shut out by visiting Hillcrest High of Riverside, 4-0, in a nonleague game on Feb. 29.
Carley Mulcahey pitched 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts, while Derian pitched 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Wyroski and Ono each tallied a base hit, while Hernandez walked once.
The Falcons (4-6) will open Pacific League action at Muir High in Pasadena on March 13 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Hoover High on March 14.

HOOVER
The Tornados secured a 12-10 victory over visiting Marshall Fundamental of Pasadena in a nonleague game on March 5. Junior Evelyn Ortiz, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, three stolen bases and two runs, pitched a six-inning complete game with six strikeouts.
Freshman Giselle Ascencio went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while senior Paola Cano went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Junior Natalie Menasaka recorded three walks and a run, freshman Hannah Parker walked once, scored a run and stole a base, and sophomore Sophia Hernandez walked twice and scored a run. Freshman Arijana Matijasevic walked once and scored a run, junior Kim De Leon scored two runs, and sophomore Samantha Marquez scored a run.
Ortiz pitched a five-inning perfect game with 10 strikeouts to help Hoover beat visiting Los Angeles Leadership Academy 10-0 in a nonleague game on Feb. 29. She also added a base hit, three runs, an RBI and a walk at the plate.
Cano went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and two runs, while Hernandez recorded a triple, an RBI and a run. Ascencio registered a hit, two stolen bases and an RBI, while Menasaka produced a hit, two stolen bases and a run. Parker walked twice, stole a pair of bases and scored a run, De Leon walked twice and scored a run, and freshman Anahit Kazaryan scored a run.
The Tornados (4-1) will open Pacific League action at Burbank on March 12 at 3:45 p.m. before traveling to Crescenta Valley High on March 14.
