Softball: Glendale’s Bats Come Alive to Build Win Streak

The Glendale High School varsity softball team picked up a convincing 12-2 nonleague victory over visiting Marshall Fundamental of Pasadena on Feb. 27. Junior Natalie Minkler pitched a five-inning complete game with eight strikeouts, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and no walks.
Sophomore Carla Bedolla went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs, while sophomore Rachel Francis went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Jazmin Combs registered a hit, two runs and two walks, junior Crystal Ortega tallied a hit, an RBI, a run and a walk, and junior Jade Marquez recorded a hit and two RBIs. Sophomore Loraly Cano produced an RBI, a run, a stolen base and a walk, senior Faith Alvarez scored two runs, walked once and stole a base, and sophomore Sky Smoot walked twice, scored two runs and stole a base. Sophomore Sareen Hagopian and freshman Jordan Alvarez each scored a run, while senior Michelle Shadanyan walked once.
The Nitros routed visiting St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy of Downey 18-0 in a nonleague game on Feb. 24. Minkler, who went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a run at the plate, pitched a five-inning complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts, one hit and one walk.
Jade Marquez went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Bedolla went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Combs went 2-for-3 with two runs, while senior Chloe Dobie went 2-for-4 with two runs. Smoot registered a home run, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, Faith Alvarez finished with a triple, an RBI and a run, and Cano recorded a double, two runs and a stolen base. Francis scored twice and walked once, Jordan Alvarez scored twice, and sophomore Paola Marquez walked once.
Jade Marquez and Minkler combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter in a 14-0 nonleague victory over visiting Dominguez High of Compton on Feb. 24.
Jade Marquez, who had a hit, three runs, three walks and stolen base at the plate, pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts, allowing just one walk and no hits. Minkler, who had a hit, two RBIs and two walks at the plate, struck out all six batters she faced across two perfect innings in the circle.
Cano went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs, while Smoot went 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Combs finished with a double, a run and a stolen base, while Bedolla tallied a double and a run. Dobie recorded a hit, three walks, two runs and a stolen base, Francis produced a hit, two runs, an RBI and a walk, and Faith Alvarez contributed a hit, two RBIs and a run. Meanwhile, sophomore Fritzy Martinez scored twice and walked once.
The Nitros lost to visiting Castaic 7-3 in a nonleague game on Feb. 22.
Cano went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run, while Minkler, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, pitched a seven-inning complete game with eight strikeouts.
Bedolla contributed a double and a run, Smoot produced a hit and an RBI, and Alvarez had a hit and a run.
Glendale (4-4 overall) will visit Westridge School in Pasadena for a nonleague game on March 5 at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Oakwood High of North Hollywood on March 7.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons overwhelmed visiting South Pasadena with a 9-0 nonleague victory on Feb. 23.
Junior Carley Mulcahey, who had a solo home run and an additional RBI at the plate, struck out all three batters she faced in a perfect inning of relief. Senior Perri Derian pitched four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, two hits and two walks.
Senior Haley Krohn went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, while junior Mila Reddy went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored. Senior Jaiden Sabelis went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while junior Alexa Johnson registered a triple and a run. Junior Jasmine Hernandez finished with a hit, two RBIs and a walk, while sophomore Kate Barnes scored two runs.
Crescenta Valley (3-2) will finish competing in the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Arizona before visiting Etiwanda for a nonleague game on March 4.

HOOVER
The Tornados secured a 14-4 victory over visiting St. Mary’s Academy of Inglewood in a nonleague game on Feb. 24 as senior Paola Cano went 2-for-3 with a double, five RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Junior Evelyn Ortiz registered a hit, three runs, three walks and two stolen bases, while sophomore Sophia Hernandez tallied a hit, a stolen base and a walk. Freshman Arijana Matijasevic finished with four walks, while junior Kim De Leon walked three times, scored three runs and stole two bases. Freshman Anahit Kazaryan scored two runs and walked once, while freshman Hannah Parker walked three times, scored two runs and stole two bases. Sophomore Samantha Marquez walked twice and scored a run, while freshman Giselle Ascencio walked twice, stole two bases and scored a run.
Hoover (1-1) will host Marshall Fundamental of Pasadena for a nonleague game on March 5 at 5 p.m. before hosting Fontana on March 7.
