Softball: Krohn Grand Slam Lifts Crescenta Valley

The Glendale High School varsity softball team narrowly lost to visiting Mountain View High of El Monte 6-5 in a nonleague game on Feb. 17.
Junior Natalie Minkler, who went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a walk, pitched a five-inning complete game with four strikeouts. Senior Jazmin Combs went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and an RBI, while senior Chloe Dobie went 2-for-2 with a run and a walk. Junior Jade Marquez registered a hit, a run and a stolen base, sophomore Sky Smoot tallied a hit and a run, and sophomore Fritzy Martinez walked once.
The Nitros suffered a 14-4 loss against visiting Pasadena Polytechnic on Feb. 17.
Minkler, who went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, racked up seven strikeouts across three and two-thirds innings in the circle. Combs registered a triple and a run, while senior Faith Alvarez tallied a double, two stolen bases and a run. Marquez produced a hit, a run and a walk, while Smoot scored once.
Glendale lost at Whittier 8-1 in a nonleague game on Feb. 15, as Minkler recorded seven strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings in the circle.
Marquez contributed a hit, an RBI and a walk, while sophomore Rachel Francis and Combs each tallied a base hit. Freshman Jordan Alvarez walked once and scored a run, while Faith Alvarez walked once.
The Nitros (1-3 overall) will host Marshall Fundamental of Pasadena on Feb. 27 at 3:15 p.m. before visiting San Marino on Feb. 29.

CRESCENTA VALLEY
The Falcons lost to visiting Mater Dei High of Santa Ana 3-1 in a Bonita Tournament game on Feb. 17.
Senior Perri Derian pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts, three hits and no walks. Junior Carley Mulcahey allowed three unearned runs on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts. Junior Alexa Johnson went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, while junior Jasmine Hernandez went 2-for-3. Junior Mila Reddy registered a double, an RBI and a walk, while senior Anais Ochoa and freshman Chloe Mulcahey each tallied a base hit.
Crescenta Valley picked up a 6-3 victory at Bonita High of La Verne in a tournament game on Feb. 15 as senior Haley Krohn slugged a grand slam with two walks.
Derian had one strikeout across four innings in the circle, while Carley Mulcahey struck out three batters in two innings of work. Junior Hannah Wyroski finished with a double and two walks, while Johnson contributed a hit, an RBI and a run. Ochoa recorded a hit and a run, while Derian had a base hit. Reddy tallied an RBI and a run, while seniors Jaiden Sabelis and Ariel Beltran each scored a run.
Crescenta Valley (2-2) will visit La Cañada for a nonleague game on Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. before competing in the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Arizona, from Feb. 29 through March 2.

HOOVER
The Tornados suffered an 11-5 season-opening loss at Marshall Fundamental in Pasadena on Feb. 15.
Freshman Giselle Ascencio went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run, while senior Paola Cano finished with a double, two RBIs and a walk. Junior Evelyn Ortiz registered a hit, three runs, two stolen bases and a walk, while freshman Hannah Parker recorded a hit, a run and a walk. Sophomore Samantha Marquez and freshman Arijana Matijasevic each tallied a base hit, while junior Kim De Leon, sophomore Sophia Hernandez and freshman Anahit Kazaryan each walked once.
Hoover (0-1) will host Los Angeles Leadership Academy for a nonleague game on Feb. 29 at 3:45 p.m. before hosting Marshall for a rematch on March 5.
