Crescenta Valley Holds on for Tournament Win

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Verdugo Hills High of Tujunga 65-62 in a South Pasadena Tournament game on Dec. 27 as Vaughn Zargarian posted a double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, one block and one steal.
Grikor Moghoyan poured in 11 points, eight assists, four rebounds and one steal, while Derek Najarian recorded 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Michael Sahagian tallied nine points and one steal, Nick Altounian finished with seven points, four rebounds and one assist, and Logan Freemon contributed seven rebounds and six points. Lachlan Blunt registered two points and two rebounds, while Dylan Shaghoian scored one point.
The Falcons routed Marshall High of Pasadena 99-32 in their tournament opener on Dec. 26, as Moghoyan racked up 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Altounian finished with 13 points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists, Zargarian contributed 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and one block, and Tishan Ahir tallied 11 points, three assists, one rebound and one steal. Blunt recorded 10 points, nine rebounds and one assist, while Arman Bedrossian chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block. Shaghoian registered eight points, three assists, one steal and one rebound, while Najarian produced seven points, three rebounds and three assists. Freemon was credited with four points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Ben Hart notched four points, three rebounds and one assist. Sahagian had five assists, three points, two rebounds and one block, while Andrew Ghazarian had four rebounds and four assists.
Crescenta Valley secured a 71-60 Pacific League victory over visiting Burbank on Dec. 21.
Najarian racked up 25 points, six assists, three steals and two rebounds, Zargarian finished with 23 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and one steal, and Sahagian chipped in 12 points, one steal and one assist. Freemon registered six rebounds, three points and one steal, while Moghoyan was credited with five assists and three points. Altounian tallied five rebounds, two points and one steal, while Blunt recorded four rebounds, two points and one assist. Shaghoian scored one point, while Bedrossian had one rebound.
The Falcons (12-4 overall, 4-1 in league) will resume league play at Glendale on Jan. 4 at 6:45 p.m. before hosting Pasadena on Jan. 9.


HOOVER

Hoover High School sophomore Harout Godzhoyan scored nine points to help the Tornados beat Rosemead in their Duarte Tournament opener on Dec. 27.

Sophomore Justin Herrera racked up 25 points, senior Zack Van Patten finished with 21 points, senior Hagop Demirjian tallied 18 points and sophomore Harout Godzhoyan scored nine points. Senior Michael Shamoun recorded seven points, junior Jaden Duncan chipped in five points and junior Arin Tahmasian contributed four points.
Hoover lost to visiting Burroughs High of Burbank 63-54 in a Pacific League game on Dec. 21 as Patten racked up 34 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Shamoun registered eight rebounds, six points, three steals and one block, while Demirjian tallied seven rebounds, six points and one block. Herrera chipped in two points, two steals, two assists and one rebound, while Tahmasian contributed four rebounds, two points and one assist. Duncan recorded three rebounds, two points and two steals, while Godzhoyan finished with two points and two rebounds.
The Tornados (8-5, 1-4) will resume league play at Burbank on Jan. 4 at 6:45 p.m. before hosting Arcadia on Jan. 9.

GLENDALE

Glendale High School senior Anthony Agakhanyan scored two points to help the Nitros beat Yeshiva University in their San Gabriel Tournament opener on Dec. 27.

Junior Joshua Ballard tallied 22 points, while senior Haig Jivalagian poured in 16 points. Junior Roman Ramirez chipped in nine points, senior Christian Pierre finished with six points and sophomore Mason Manalo recorded five points. Junior Koko Bazrbachi produced three points, senior Anthony Agakhanyan and junior Chris Martirosyan each finished with two points, and senior David Davtian scored one point.
Glendale (9-6, 2-2) will resume league play with a home game against Crescenta Valley High on Jan. 4 at 6:45 p.m. before hosting Burroughs High of Burbank on Jan. 9.
