Glendale Sweeps Way Into CIF Semifinals

The Glendale High School varsity girls’ volleyball team swept host Gahr High in Cerritos 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 in a CIF Southern Section Division VI quarterfinal showdown on Oct. 24.
The Nitros (33-6 overall) secured their 26th consecutive victory and have not lost a set since Oct. 4. Glendale is the No. 2 seed in the Division VI ranking.
Junior Aleina Manaois racked up 13 kills, 12 assists, six digs and two aces, while senior Arianna Vargas finished with 27 digs and one ace. Junior Emerson Whiting recorded 12 assists and three digs, freshman Eileen Herrera tallied seven digs, six kills and one ace, and junior Erin Freeman contributed 11 digs.
Glendale swept visiting Highland High of Palmdale 25-9, 25-19, 25-20 in a CIF second-round matchup on Oct. 21 as Manaois produced 14 kills, seven assists and five digs.
Junior Mika Valiente collected seven blocks and four kills, Herrera registered eight digs and three kills, and Vargas was credited with eight assists.
The Nitros swept host Valley View High of Moreno Valley 25-20, 25-20, 26-24 in their CIF opener on Oct. 19, as Manaois amassed 32 assists, 24 kills, seven aces and one block.
Vargas racked up 26 assists and five digs, while junior Kirsten Caraan contributed 16 digs. Herrera chipped in nine kills, Freeman tallied 10 digs, and junior Breanna Cuellar finished with five blocks and two digs.
Glendale will host No. 3 Linfield Christian High of Temecula in a semifinal match on Oct. 28.
If victorious, the Nitros would battle either No. 8 Mayfair (21-7) or Moorpark (8-9 overall) for the CIF Division VI title on Nov. 3 or 4.


CRESCENTA VALLEY

The Falcons lost at El Dorado High of Placentia in four games, 22-25, 25-20, 14-25, 19-25, in a CIF Division IV second-round matchup on Oct. 21.
Freshman Adelyn Lopez registered 10 kills, three digs and one ace, while junior co-captain Isabel Haytayan contributed 10 kills. Junior Caden Pinto racked up 28 assists, 12 digs, four kills and one ace, while junior co-captain Sofia Shin tallied 21 digs and three aces. Senior Pilar Garcia recorded eight digs and three aces, while senior Sophia Aroyan produced eight digs and one ace. Junior Hannah Wyroski chipped in six kills and six digs, while senior Natalie Avakian finished with nine digs. Senior Emma Santa Ana was credited with two kills, while junior Jamie Shoemake had one kill.
CVHS finished the campaign tied with Glendale as the Pacific League runner-up with an 11-3 record (33-8 overall).
