Boys’ volleyball: Nitros, Falcons Each Win Five-Set Thrillers

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity boys’ volleyball team edged visiting Hart High of Newhall, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 17-15, in a nonleague encounter on Tuesday as senior Drew Puttler amassed 44 assists, four digs, three kills, one ace and one block.
Senior Jason Nelson racked up 17 kills and six digs, senior Will Allen registered 14 kills, 15 digs, two aces and one block, and junior Logan Freemon tallied 14 kills, six digs, two aces and two blocks. Senior William Chin finished with four kills, three blocks and one dig while sophomore Colin Walley recorded five kills and one dig. Senior Dylan Hsu produced five aces, seven assists and 10 digs while junior Matt Hong had three aces and one dig.
The Falcons previously swept visiting South Pasadena in a nonleague matchup, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20. Puttler racked up 32 assists, two digs, one block and one ace, Freemon registered 12 kills, six digs, one ace and one block, and Allen tallied 10 kills, five digs and one ace. Walley finished with seven kills and one block, Nelson recorded five kills, three digs, one block and one ace, and Hsu produced five digs, two aces and two assists. Chin posted one kill and one dig, Hong collected one dig and one ace, and junior Ben Hart had one kill.
CVHS (7-2 overall) will host St. Francis High of La Cañada Flintridge in a nonleague matchup on Tuesday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m. before opening Pacific League action against visiting Burbank on March 9.

GLENDALE


The Nitros swept visiting Cabrillo High of Long Beach, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16, in a nonleague matchup on Monday as senior Ergueen Herrera racked up 16 kills, four digs and one ace.
Sophomore Quan Tran tallied six kills, eight digs and two blocks while junior Thomas Gonzales finished with five kills and two blocks.
Glendale defeated host Flintridge Prep in La Cañada Flintridge, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12, in a nonleague thriller last Friday as Herrera registered 16 kills and 11 digs. Junior Koko Haboian racked up 18 assists, Gonzales tallied six kills, six digs and five blocks, and junior Vraj Bhagat recorded eight blocks.
The Nitros previously swept visiting St. Genevieve High of Panorama City in a nonleague match, 25-18, 25-14, 25-17. Herrera finished with 15 kills and four blocks while Haboian recorded 18 assists. Junior Nick Ramirez registered three kills and six blocks, Bhagat produced seven blocks and senior Alex Nuqui had six blocks.
Glendale (8-0 overall) will host Pasadena in its Pacific League opener on Thursday, March 9, at 3:30 p.m.
