Hoover Wins, Glendale Loses in Season Openers

The Hoover High School varsity football team opened its season by crushing visiting Mark Keppel High of Alhambra, 70-0, in a nonleague game last Friday.
Junior quarterback Ethan Davis completed six passes in eight attempts for 133 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding one carry for eight yards on the ground.
Senior Cedric Lynum turned in a stellar effort, rushing for a game-high 188 yards on 13 carries with four touchdowns, while senior Daniel Rangel made three receptions for 83 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception.
Senior Frank Higginbotham lll tallied three receptions for 53 yards with a touchdown, junior Samvel Mamalashvili carried once for nine yards with a touchdown, sophomore Joel Jauregui had one catch for 12 yards and freshman Kenneth Ruiz had one carry for eight yards.
Junior Joseph Dizon returned a punt for 58 yards to score a touchdown and junior Daniel Baneham was a perfect 8-for-8 in PAT attempts to go along with a two-point conversion. Freshman quarterback Aj Francisco tallied one 15-yard completion for a touchdown.
The Tornados will return to action by hosting Duarte in a nonleague game on Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m.

GLENDALE

The Nitros opened the season with a narrow 12-6 loss to visiting Gabrielino High of San Gabriel last Friday.
Junior Jonathan Wells produced six completions for 138 yards in the air while adding 15 yards on five carries on the ground. Senior Jayden Wilia tallied four receptions for 78 yards while adding a team-high eight tackles, four sacks and seven hurries on defense. Sophomore Joseph Caballero rushed 60 yards on six carries with one touchdown, and senior Isaac Quiroz posted one completion for 14 yards and three carries for 58 yards while making three tackles on defense. Senior Justin Melville collected a pair of receptions for 50 yards and three tackles on defense
Senior Ethan Faria had six tackles, one sack and 12 hurries, while juniors Alfred Intriago and Sergio Avalos and sophomore Mark Dacles each posted six tackles. Seniors Chima Cosmas and Mateo Gutierrez each had five tackles. Sophomore Alex Shirvanian tallied three tackles and one sack, and juniors Jonathan Anaya and Greg Terzian each registered three tackles. Junior Freddie Rios notched three tackles and a sack, while senior Bryant Marte had a pair of tackles and a sack. Senior Alexis Bonilla and Junior Moises Zermeno each finished with one tackle.
The Nitros suffered another defeat Thursday, Aug. 25, falling to host Alhambra, 35-8, in a nonleague contest. Glendale was shut out in the first half but responded in the third quarter with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to get on the board. No individual statistics were reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Glendale will host Lynwood in a nonleague game on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.
