‘Stars for Tomorrow’ Gala Set for Sept. 22

First published in the Sept. 8 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

Stars will hold its annual “Stars for Tomorrow” gala on Thursday, Sept. 22, to celebrate the work of Stars in the PUSD community with mentoring, after-school programming, college support, summer enrichment and wellness programming.
The event, which will be held at the local home of David and Mary Sue Scheidler, will honor the 20th anniversary of Stars’ Associate Director Curt Gibson.
“Curt has been instrumental in the strategic direction and growth of Stars as an organization,” said Executive Director Nancy Stiles. “He began his career as youth pastor and founded Stars’ mentoring program in 2003, and now leads the team that oversees the wellness, mentoring, college support and counseling programs.”
Gibson has also been involved in writing, consulting, speaking and brainstorming for various organizations including the Fuller Youth Institute, Word Action, Youth Specialties, Urban Youth Workers Institute, Christian Community Development Association, DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative and a school-based mentoring program in Monrovia and Duarte.
He studied outdoor Christian ministries and youth ministry at Rockmont College in Lakewood, Colorado. He and his wife, Kathy, are involved members of the Pasadena/Altadena community and have resided here since 1987.
“Stars for Tomorrow” sponsors include Rich and Barb Wilson of Volkswagen Pasadena, Million Dollar Baby, Raam Construction, Chick-fil-A Pasadena, Adam and Nancy Stiles, David and Mary Sue Scheidler, Wells Fargo, Stephen and Mary Anne Cunningham, Sarkissian & Perera Group, and Brad and Clarissa Weirick.
The event will feature a meal prepared by renowned local caterer Mary Pat Brandemeyer and entertainment by local singer/songwriter Deb Morrison.
An auction will feature unique travel and culinary experiences, including a BBQ and Bourbon dinner for eight guests.
