HMRI to Offer Summer High School STEM Program

With a longstanding mission to educate and inspire the next generation of outstanding scientists to follow their interests and develop toward science-related careers, and help make biomedical research and health sciences education accessible to everyone, Huntington Medical Research Institutes, a world-class Pasadena-based biomedical research organization, will offer its High School STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program again this year.
Student applications and teacher recommendations for HMRI’s High School STEM program are open until March 6. The program is open to rising juniors and seniors in the Pasadena Unified School District wishing to learn and deepen their knowledge of biomedical sciences. Focusing on different subject matter each week, the program will begin June 19 and culminate with a July 28 closing symposium. Classes are weekdays, Monday through Friday, with morning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) or afternoon (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) sessions. All students accepted into the program will receive a paid stipend at the conclusion of the program. To apply, please scan the QR code in our ad on the opposite page.
“Our STEM program gives local high school students who might not otherwise have access to top-tier interactive educational programs in these disciplines invaluable opportunities to learn from and collaborate with HMRI research scientists and staff, a STEM instructor and university/college teaching assistants and mentors,” said HMRI Director of Education Programs Carlos Aguirre, Ph.D.
HMRI’s High School STEM program is funded through grants and donations. “We welcome and are deeply grateful for philanthropic contributions of any size from those who share our passion for making these educational opportunities accessible to everyone and are committed to being excellent stewards of the donations entrusted to us for this purpose,” said HMRI Chief Development Officer Jocelyn Ferguson.
The scientists and staff of HMRI are powered by passion and determination, working tirelessly to uncover new and uncharted solutions to some of humankind’s most daunting cardiovascular and neurological challenges, like heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, migraine and mental illness.
Established in 1952, HMRI’s history is steeped in game-changing research and developments, from the cerebrospinal fluid shunt system for hydrocephalus, to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging spectroscopy for use with brain tumors, dementia, stroke, multiple sclerosis and cancer.
Today, HMRI’s Pasadena campus includes biomedical laboratories focused on the connections between the brain and the heart, and the intersection between the two. HMRI is proud of its 70-year history of scientific discovery, made in Pasadena.
