International Film Festival Ends on High Note

The competitive portion of the Glendale International Film Festival concluded on Sunday, with awards announced at a closing night reception hosted at Pirch.
Films were screened at the Laemmle Glendale theater Friday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 2. Student films were also screened at Glendale Community College that weekend. In addition to the usual crop of awards, Glendale Arts this year unveiled the Velvet Award, named after the film festival’s founder, Velvet Rhodes, who died in 2020. It is awarded to an outstanding female filmmaker.
Glendale Arts also announced the following awards on Sunday:
• Best Variety Short Short: “Meet Me at the Barre”
• Best Short Short: “Addictions”
• Best International Short: “Djibril’s Forest” (Belgium)
• Best Animation Short: “Trojan Horace”
• Best Horror/Thriller Short: “Bodies Will Tumble And Roll”
• Best Comedy Short: “El Fred”
• Best Drama Short: “The Reliever”
• Best Screenplay Short: “The Richter Wrecker”
• Best Screenplay Feature: “Eleanor of Ellendale of Earth”
• Best Student Short Short: “An Qing”
• Best Student Short: “Magician: Game of Detective”
• Best Student Screenplay: “Hope”
• Velvet Award: Annika Hylmo (Director/Writer/Producer of “Dr. Penelope”)
• Best International Feature: “12 Months of KAI” (Japan)
• Best Documentary Feature: “Motherland”
• Best Feature: “Gap Weekend”
