Glendale’s two breweries each took home a gold medal this month in the California State Fair Craft Beer Competition.
Brewyard Beer Company won first place in the amber mixed style category with its signature Jewel City beer, while Paperback Brewing Company won the specialty IPA style category with its seasonal red ale, Satan Wears Pajamas.
The award represents the seventh total for Jewel City, a California common named in tribute to Glendale. The so-called “steam beer” is brewed with lager yeast but fermented at ale temperatures and produces flavors of toast, caramel malt and earthy hop bitterness, with a respectable 6.3% ABV. The beer won two awards last year — a bronze at the San Diego International Commercial Beer Competition and a gold at the California Craft Brewers Cup.
Satan Wears Pajamas, an American red ale, is brewed using Azacca, Ekuanot and Columbus hops, producing a toasty malt flavor with coffee and jam notes and yielding a 7.1% ABV with 68 IBUs. This represents Paperback’s second-ever award, after also taking home a gold medal for IPAs in the California Craft Brewers Cup last year for its mosaic IPA, Tucked In By Strangers.
Brewyard Beer Company is located at 906 Western Ave., and Paperback Brewing Company is located at 422 Magnolia Ave.
