CV Wins CIF Opener; Nitros, Tornados Finish Season

Senior starting pitcher Jameson Ferraro twirled a complete game shutout to help the Crescenta Valley High School varsity baseball team win its CIF-SS Division II first-round playoff game, 2-0, at South Hills High in West Covina on Thursday. Ferraro allowed two hits, no walks and struck out three batters to earn the win while adding a double and a run scored on offense.
Senior teammate Kris McCollum doubled and registered a pair of RBIs, junior Nico Terenzi doubled and senior Luke Steele posted a base hit and a run scored.
CVHS, which finished fourth in the Pacific League standings with an 8-6 record (16-12 overall), advanced to the second round of the CIF postseason and will host Palos Verdes High of the Palos Verdes Estates on Tuesday, May 10. If victorious, Crescenta Valley would play in a quarterfinal game against either Hart High of Newhall (21-9 overall) or Millikan High of Long Beach (21-8 overall) on Friday, May 13.
The Falcons previously concluded the regular season by losing a league game at Arcadia, 3-2, last Friday. Junior Connor Campbell took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts across 6.2 innings. Meanwhile, the offense was relatively quiet as it only produced three hits. Senior Zack Petersen collected a base hit, a run scored and a stolen base, McCollum tallied a base hit and an RBI, and sophomore Jacob Deno had a base hit and a stolen base. Ferraro scored once and swiped a pair of bases, while senior Chris Barrena stole a base.

The Nitros picked up a dominant 16-1 Pacific League victory at intracity rival Hoover High last Friday to conclude the regular season.
Junior Erik Chavez collected a pair of hits, five RBIs and two runs scored, while junior Javier Solis went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Junior Frankie Malagon tallied three hits, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, senior Sean Carson posted a pair of hits and two runs scored, and sophomore Jason Martinez recorded a base hit, two runs scored and an RBI.
Senior Danny Villela produced a base hit and a pair of runs scored, sophomore Diego Avila registered a base hit, an RBI and a run scored, junior Aaron Ruiz and sophomore Matthew Vega each notched a base hit and a run scored, and senior Jesse Molina and junior Josh Hopkins each scored once.
The Nitros finished the season sixth in the Pacific League standings with a 6-8 record (11-9 overall).

HOOVER

The Tornados concluded their season by falling to visiting intracity rival Glendale, 16-1, in a Pacific League game last Friday. No individual statistics were reported to the Glendale News-Press.
Hoover placed eighth in the Pacific League standings with a 1-13 record (3-16 overall).
