Falcons, Nitros Jump Start Lacrosse Seasons

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity girls’ lacrosse team was perfect in its season-opener as it shut out visiting Westridge School of Pasadena, 18-0. Junior captains Haylen Molina and Brianne Ballard each led with three goals while adding four and three assists, respectively. Senior captain Bless Berelc, senior attacker Yvalisse Ganzon, senior midfielder Ashlyn Burton and junior attacker Stephanie Voskanian each tallied two goals, while junior midfielder Paige Mercer, junior midfielder Sophia Kachkeran, freshman defender Kaylani Parker and freshman attacker Camden Ballard each scored once.

The Falcons traveled to El Segundo and won a nonleague matchup, 15-5, on Feb. 16. Berelc scored a team-high four goals while Camden Ballard and Molina each notched three goals. Brianne Ballard had one goal and a team-high five assists, while senior attacker Nour Shammaa, junior attacker Shari Park, Voskanian and Burton each scored one goal.

The Falcons collected their third straight victory after defeating host Carpinteria Cate, 12-5, in a nonleague game on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

When two undefeated teams match up, only one can walk away happy. In this case, the Falcons got the short end of the stick and lost their first game of the season at Culver City, 12-8, in a nonleague matchup on Thursday. No individual statistics were available for the final two games by the Glendale News-Press’ deadline.

Crescenta Valley (3-1 overall record) is scheduled to visit Redondo Union High of Redondo Beach in a nonleague matchup on Monday, Feb. 28, at 5:30 p.m.


The Nitros lost their home season opener to visiting Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 6-2, in a nonleague game. No individual statistics were reported to the Glendale News-Press.

Glendale (1-0 overall) is scheduled to host Lynwood in a nonleague game on Monday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m.
