Behind a near-perfect effort from No. 1 singles player Teleya Blunt, the Crescenta Valley girls’ tennis team opened its season with a 13-5 win over league rival John Burroughs High School. Blunt did not lose a single point, sweeping her three sets 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
“She absolutely crushed it today,” CV head coach Alex Jang said. “It was good to see her come out of the gate swinging and start the season really strong for us.”
Falcons No. 2 Chloe Kim won two of her sets, going 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. No. 3 Lexi Sheynin dropped her sets 2-6, 3-6, 1-6.
CV also got great performances from its doubles teams. The No. 1 duo Denitsa Georgiena and Sophia Labellarte swept their sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, while No. 3 tandem Karis Yun and Hannah Yoon also swept, going 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 doubles team Nicole Ouh and Yujin Lee split their sets 3-6, 7-6 while No. 4 team Kayla Tmong and Amanda An won their only set 6-2.
Jang was impressed by the way Falcons players battled through nerves in the opening sets, which marked their first competitive high school tennis in over a year, and settled in as the match went on.
“They wanted to win,” Jang said. “It showed in the way that they were talking between sets, it showed in the way they were playing as we got to the later sets. Their competitive spirit, their fighting spirit was really, really good to see.”
